Observation Narrative
This plot is located on a very high, well-drained terrace and levee adjacent to the Nottoway River. The terrace is fairly broad and grades into a sloping upland ca. 70 meters east of the plot. This habitat is likely inundated temporarily only in the largest floods. It is forested with a fairly diverse, even-aged mixed hardwood stand that regenerated after logging a few decades ago. The largest trees are only ca. 50 cm DBH. Quercus pagoda, Q. michauxii, several Carya spp., Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Ulmus alata are all present in the canopy and sub-canopy. Ilex opaca, Carpinus caroliniana, and Vaccinium elliottii are common shrubs. The herb layer is dominated by sedges and grasses. See also plot CHUB004, which, although much farther from the river, is part of the same stand and located ca. 250 meters to the south.
